School of Pharmaceutical Sciences

Introduction

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Kunming Medical University was established in 1996 and renamed as the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2004. Yunnan Key Laboratory of Pharmacology for Natural Products was one of the first batch of provincial key laboratories approved by the Yunnan Government in 1992. In 2008, Yunnan Key Laboratory of Pharmacology for Natural Products was integrated with the School of Pharmacy and they were named as the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Yunnan Key Laboratory of Pharmacology for Natural Products. In 2009, the Department of Chemistry of the School of Medicine was incorporated into it.

The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Yunnan Key Laboratory of Pharmacology for Natural Products of Kunming Medical University is the education base for high-tech innovative talents in pharmaceutical sciences of Yunnan Province, the training base for outstanding pharmaceutical talents in Yunnan Province, and the pilot school for the transformation and development of colleges and universities in Yunnan Province. It is also the current member of the National Steering Committee of Pharmacy Professional Education, Director Unit of its Yunnan Branch, Chairman Unit of Yunnan Pharmacological Association, Executive Vice Chairman Unit of Yunnan Pharmaceutical Association, and Executive Director Unit of Yunnan Licensed Pharmacists Association.

Currently, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences & Yunnan Key Laboratory of Pharmacology for Natural Products has 89 staff (37 males and 52 females). Among them, 47 have received doctoral degrees, accounting for 52.81%, and 38 hold master's degrees, accounting for 42.69%. There are 21 staff with senior professional title and 33 with vice-senior professional title. At present, 1,315 students (including 1 international student) are studying at the school, including 209 master's students, 32 doctoral students and 1074 undergraduate students.

The college offers three undergraduate programs, including Pharmaceutical Sciences, Pharmaceutics and Clinical Pharmacy, among which Pharmaceutical Sciences is a national characteristic program, granted with the national professional certification in the first batch in 2016 and is the national first-class undergraduate program enlisted in Double 10,000 Plan in the first batch in 2019. Clinical Pharmacy was approved as a construction site of national first-class undergraduate program in 2021. Pharmaceutics was approved as a construction site of provincial first-class program in 2021. All core courses of each program are accredited as provincial first-class courses. Pharmaceutical Sciences was graded C in the fourth round of national discipline evaluation in 2017. The school got 1 authorized academic master’s discipline in 2011, 1 professional master’s discipline in Pharmaceutical Sciences in 2014, 1 authorized academic doctorate discipline in 2018, and a postdoctoral research station in Yunnan Province in 2019. In 2021, the discipline of Pharmacology and Toxicology entered the top 1% of the global ESI rankings. It has led and demonstrated the reformation, innovation and development of pharmacy disciplines in colleges and universities in Yunnan province.

The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences always insists on the fundamental task of fostering virtue through education, actively builds the Ten-tenet Education System, emphasizes scientific and educational coordination, school-enterprise interaction, and cultural education to build characteristic brands. 


Programs

The undergraduate education of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Pharmaceutics lasts for 4 years, while of Clinical Pharmacy lasts for 5 years. Students who meet the graduation requirements for undergraduates are allowed to graduate and obtain a Bachelor of Science degree. Excellent undergraduates may be recommended without examination to Kunming Medical University or another domestic university for postgraduate study, or apply to a foreign renowned university for further study, or make an independent career choice.

Pharmaceutical Sciences is a national characteristic program which was established in 1996. Undergraduate students mainly learn the basic theory and knowledge of the main branches of pharmacy, including pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, pharmacy, pharmaceutical analysis, etc., receive the basic training of pharmaceutical research methods and skills, and acquire the basic abilities of innovative drug research & development, quality control evaluation, and guidance for rational drug use, and be competent for drug research and development, drug production, drug quality control, drug supervision and management and pharmaceutical services.

Pharmaceutics is a scientifically and engineeringly compatible pharmacy science major. Undergraduate students mainly learn the basic theories, knowledge and skills of modern pharmacy, focus on pharmaceutical preparation, production and management, dosage form design, process design, technological transformation and quality control, receive basic training in pharmaceutical preparation production technology and quality control experimental skills, acquire the basic abilities of pharmaceutical preparation production process design, production management, technical transformation and quality control, able to develop and research new preparations, new dosage forms, new processes and new excipients, and familiar with the laws and regulations of pharmaceutical affairs management and the national guidelines and policies on drug production, design, research and development, environmental protection, etc.

Clinical Pharmacy: In order to adapt to the requirements of hospital pharmacy in the new situation, under the background of shortage of clinical pharmacy talents in Yunnan province, clinical pharmacy major was established in 2010, relying on the establishment of national characteristic specialty pharmacy, which is one of the first batch of local colleges and universities. Students of this major should master the basic knowledge, basic logic and basic skills of clinical pharmacy, master the basic knowledge and relevant professional knowledge and skills of pharmacy and clinical medicine, and receive the basic training of clinical pharmacy practice, clinical pharmacy research methods and skills, and have the basic knowledge and skills to undertake clinical pharmaceutical technology work, drug evaluation, pharmaceutical information and consulting services, participate in the design and practice of clinical drug therapy programs, and implement rational drug use.

The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences offers graduate study leading to a master’s degree (duration of study is 3 years) or doctoral degree (duration of study is 3 to 4 years).

Our master programs allow students to pursue academic master degree or professional master degree in Pharmacy. The academic master program offers students the opportunity to conduct outstanding research projects and receive training in a broad range of fields within pharmaceutical sciences, and specializations include: Pharmacology, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Clinical Pharmacy, Microbial and Biochemical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutics, Pharmacognostics, and Social and Administrative Pharmacy. The purpose of professional degree is to cultivate application-oriented, technically skilled pharmaceutical talents with a solid theoretical foundation and adapt to the actual work needs of pharmaceutical industry.

The doctoral education aims to cultivate high-level innovative talents with overall development, facing the world and the future, and able to engage in teaching and scientific research in the field of pharmacy. The School of Pharmaceutical Sciences implements the “application - review” system in the enrollment of doctoral students, and six doctorate programs including Pharmacology, Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Analysis, Clinical Pharmacy, Pharmaceutics and Pharmacognostics are open to enrollment.
